Summer School 2021

We are organizing an International Summer School entitled "The natural form of concrete – Analysis and testing on Nervi’s Ferrocemento" to be held at Politecnico di Torino in June 2021 for MSc and PhD students of engineering, architecture and pertinent disciplines.

Scopes of the Summer School

During the course, students from different disciplines (structural engineers, construction engineers and architects) will have the opportunity to learn and deepen the issues related to the conservation of the heritage of the twentieth century. Through a multidisciplinary approach, students will learn how to analyze buildings belonging to this heritage, of which Torino is rich in testimonies, through didactic lessons and excursions. In particular, students will have the opportunity to analyze the work of Pier Luigi Nervi and its main elements in ferrocement: in the laboratories of Politecnico they will reconstruct elements in ferrocement that will undergo mechanical tests and measurements, to better understand not only the manufacturing process but the qualities and mechanical properties that have made it one of the most characteristic elements of one of the most famous Italian designers in the world.

Activities

  • Frontal lectures from various experts of different fields;
  • Laboratory activities: hands-on the ferrocement elements of Pier Luigi Nervi
  • Design work with tutoring
  • Site-visits to the twentieth century architectural legacy of Turin
  • Social activities

Stay tuned for further updates!
